 The Story of the Antique Frame

The frame itself tells a chapter of history: It is an old cellar window rescued from the over 100-year-old house where I am privileged to live.

Throughout this year, I have breathed new life into the frame:

The old, cracked window paint was lovingly sanded down.

The wood was white-stained to highlight its beautiful texture.

A steel cable was installed on the back for secure hanging and much more.

This dual-paned reclaimed window frame now exclusively serves as the stylish setting for my stained glass artwork and is no longer functional as a standard window. The frame is split in two, creating a captivating dialogue between the elements.

The Seagull: Call of the Fjord and Coastal Charm

The right side of the art features an elegant Seagull perched on a wooden post, crafted from vibrant coloured glass.

From spring to autumn, the gulls are frequent visitors to my rooftop. What some people perceive as an unpleasant seagull screech, I hear as the call of the fjord and the sea.

The seagull symbolizes the proximity to the coast and the boundless expanse of the ocean.

Reflection and Contrast: The Rose Antique Mirror

The left half of the frame holds a panel of antique rose-coloured mirror glass. This element provides a symbolic reflection and a striking contrast:

Reflection: It invites literal and figurative contemplation—about ourselves and our interaction with nature.

Symbolism: The antique rose hue symbolically represents a peaceful evening sky and the romantic, almost naive notion that everything is "peace, joy, and harmony."

This is where the artwork makes its statement: In stark contrast to this rose-tinted view stands the often-conflicted reality. Humanity's relationship with the sea and fjords is not always positive. We may love the beauty, but often struggle when a flood threatens residents, or we take resources without maintaining the balance. Humans often live in a battle with the ocean, rather than peacefully alongside it.

This Upcycled Glass Art is therefore a compelling invitation to acknowledge both the beauty and the complexity of our marine connection.

Each glass is different in colour and structure which isn´t possible to capture in a picture. Glass in kind is always different to a picture. Coloration and reflections are dependent on many factors like time of the day, lighting conditions and so on.
